"The Runner," is a sci-fi/horror short film that follows a woman and her blind son down the haunting coastline of a post-apocalyptic world as they deliver a very important package. As the mothers injury starts to take her life, the boy must learn to embrace his disability, and conquer his own fears to survive against all odds.
This is the second short film from the Mack brothers, who's previous short film "You're Family Now" has gone on to win Best U.S. Horror short at the Venice Shorts film festival, and has been an official selection at 9 other film festivals around the country.
Character and Story Details:
The boy is young, blind, and curious as hell. He was abandoned as a baby, and raised by a strong woman who adopted him and raised him as a survivor. His adopted mother is a "Runner." She runs packages and information between isolated communities in our future post apocalyptic world. The film picks up years later where the boy is now a bit older and self taught himself how to echo-locate. (Using clicking sounds with his mouth to see)
Our film kicks off following the woman on a dangerous "run" evading a creature (we never see) through the woods. She's severely injured and making her way to the shoreline where the boy and a small boat are waiting for her. As the boy is waiting for her on the beach, a sound lures him into the woods, and he soon finds himself being hunted by the very things his mother warned him about. He quickly races back to the shoreline just as the woman is making a run to the boat, and they make a narrow escape. In the final moments of the film, the woman's injury starts to take her life, and she is left handing everything over to the boy, who must find the strength and courage to finish the job without her.
